Home-front judging for all Coronado homes is right around the corner, so now is the time to get rid of those dandelions, polish that mailbox, put a new coat of paint on the front gate and plant those annuals. After all, you want those daisies, roses, and poppies to be at their perkiest the last week of March. Home-front judging is a division of the Coronado Flower Show, which has been presented since 1922 and is Coronado’s oldest tradition.
In addition to the 6,000 single-family homes in the Village and Coronado Cays, all commercial fronts, church and school gardens, municipal buildings, condos and apartments, and hotels and motels will be judged.
A cadre of 120 volunteers divided into teams of two, including volunteers from the Coronado Real Estate Association, will walk or bike their designated city blocks at a time of their own choosing between Monday, March 27, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Tuesday, March, 28, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Wednesday, March 29, 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
The teams will rate each home for its overall appearance and will bestow certificates embedded with ribbons for Honorary Mention, Third Place, Second Place or the Coveted First Place blue ribbon.
“All judging rates each home for its own potential, not in relationship to neighboring homes,” said Home Front Judging Chairman Rob Crenshaw. “The judging is done to encourage civic beautification.”
A “People’s Choice” award is a recent addition to judging. To vote for your favorite home front, go to coronadoflowershow.com from Monday March 27 through Saturday, April 1.
The teams will then convene to review the blue ribbon finishers. Judges will return to several home fronts for a second look to select the Top Ten home fronts on the island – each gets a special ribbon.
Attendees at this year’s Flower Show, to be held Saturday and Sunday, April 8 and 9, will receive a self-guided map to the Top Ten home fronts. Results of all winners will be published in the Coronado Eagle & Journal, and online at CoronadoTimes.com and the flower show website, CoronadoFlowerShow.com.
